Sunday Worship

A warm invitation is extended to our morning service at 10.30am every Sunday. All ages are catered for during the service which lasts about one hour with tea & coffee served afterwards. On Sunday evenings we share in worship with the other churches in the Circuit as shown in the Circuit Plan.

Church Building

Founded: Although there was a Methodist Society in Great Horton pre 1766 (John Wesley visited Horton in 1745) the first Meeting House was built at Old Todley in 1766, a small colony of houses on the site of Harris Court Mills (Yorkshire Envelopes), the centre of the old Great Horton village. The building on the present site was built in 1814 and was renovated and extended in 1862 to the present building which then could seat a congregation of 1200. There were two large schoolrooms on the opposite side of Great Horton Road which were rebuilt after a disastrous fire in 1904. In the 1950's the crush hall was added in the church building.

Renovated: In 1973/4 the interior of the building was completely reformed and modernised forming two storeys with the church on the ground floor anda concert hall on the first floor. At this time the society was an amalgamation of the Wesleyans, with the societies from Bethel, Dirkhill and Shearbridge forming Great Horton Methodist Church. Soon after this the schools were demolished after a fire and now form the site if the Ridge Medical Centre.

Listing: In 1983 the building was Grade 2 listed within the Great Horton Road Conservation Area.

Merger: In July 2005 the church merged with Lidget Green and United Reformed Church to become The Great Horton with Lidget Green Methodist/United Reformed church. It is interesting to note thatin 1881 a branch Sunday School was formed in Lidget Green after a meeting of several gentlemen from Great Horton and Lidget Green.
